The Evidence
Research in Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985) consistently shows that people motivated by internal values — health, energy, confidence, relationships — achieve significantly better long-term weight maintenance than those motivated primarily by external pressures. A landmark study by Teixeira et al. (2012) found that autonomous motivation predicted long-term weight loss maintenance, while controlled motivation did not.
